Breakfast this morning was delicious. We had small fried fish filets with a buttery sauce/gravy, starfruit, papaya, toast with guava jelly, and bammy. Bammy look like English muffins and are made from cassava, a small root vegetable similar to a potato. They are fried and have a mild taste, sort of like grits or potato pancakes. We ate ours plain, but I imagine they would also be good with sweet or savory toppings.
This morning’s turnout at the church for the worship workshop was a little less than yesterday. We played and sang with the musicians and singers all morning and then all had a late lunch in the fellowship hall with the participants. Rev Harris had brought the meals that his wife June had made an put into styrofoam takeout containers for us.
After lunch, the musicians jammed for a little while as the rain rolled in. I forgot to write about it on Wednesday, but the rain we had that evening was a challenge we hadn’t expected. While we were practicing a song, it began to rain very hard, so hard that we couldn’t hear the music over the rain. Since there is no air conditioning, we had the doors to the fellowship hall and the shutters over the windows open, so in addition to the rain pounding on the roof, the walls and windows didn’t muffle the sound at all. Another challenge we were surprised by during prep for our first session on Wednesday is that the only microphone stands the church has are attached to the lecterns. Since I wasn’t doing anything to directly contribute to the musical portion of our trip, I volunteered to be the mic stand and hold the mic for Lance. On Thursday, knowing our predicament, James brought a camera tripod and some masking tape to fashion a better mic stand than I’ll ever be.
Before heading back to the manse, we stopped for snacks at a small grocery/convenience store just down the block from the church. I got a small bottle of Coke, two protein bars, a small bag of Jamaican brand cheetos, and Jamaican brand cheeze-its for $345.00 Jamaican dollars, which is about $3.00.
This evening back at the manse has had a decidedly American flavor to it. We had hot dogs and fries for dinner, and as soon as we finish our evening devotion, we plan to settle in front of the Tvto tune in to the Royals game. #foreverroyal
