Today is a half-day of work for us at Together, Inc. We worked in the community garden that Big Garden started there and learned a little about all the services, including a food pantry, that Together provides for low income individuals in the community. We got to meet and work with Chet, who has been working at Together for several years, and does general maintenance and other work as needed. Again, we mulched and weeded – a never ending task in a garden – and joked and worked through the heat of the morning. We were definitely thankful for the cloud cover today!

After mulching for awhile outside, we were able to take a break from the heat and do a little work inside, stocking shelves in the food pantry while people shopped for groceries. Together provides essential nutrition for free, along with a place to gather fresh, healthy vegetables in the garden, and also provides services for transportation and family services. Chet mentioned that the community garden doesn’t just provide healthy food, but also an essential gathering place for people in the community where they could feel safe and build relationships…”Together”!

Today, after lunch we will head back home and we feel like the trip has been so short with a lot packed into just a few days. We met some amazing people, were inspired by the work happening around sustainable food in Omaha, and we can’t wait to come back and work together again! It’s been an eye-opening trip, and we are so thankful for the work everyone is doing in the name of God!
