At the end of the day, after devotion, we held a mini-debrief of the day where each person on the team gets to talk about one high, one low, and one place we saw God during the day. For many of us, one of the lows was seeing our fellow team members feeling sick; it’s hard to lose a member of the team, even for a little while. When we are together 24/7 and bond in the ways we have over our shared experiences, it’s like losing a part of your own body, and we all feel that loss.

But the lows didn’t keep us down – everyone is starting to rebound – and the highs were more than enough to sustain us. Working with the kids in their classrooms is just one part of it. The highs included WINNING the soccer game today (yes, winning, why do you look so surprised?). Well, ok we “borrowed” some of the students’ best players, so that helped…delivering baskets of goods as a way of extending hospitality to the community and blessing their families with some extra treats that they might not be able to afford otherwise…working on our Spanish with help from our new translator friends and construction friends, and reciprocating by helping them with some English…touring the school to see the amazing computer lab and the other grades that we don’t get to visit during the day’s lessons…meeting our sponsor kids and having lunch with them and their families…I could go on, but let me just say that we have been truly blessed by this day through the highs, and the through the lows.

We were reminded today of this part of the Wesley Covenant Prayer: “…Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by you or laid aside for you, exalted for you or brought low for you…” So be it.
